Revolution in Morocco

The main business revolution in Morocco over the past years has been in tourism. The most famous city to visit is Marrakesh. With many new hotels and resorts, many tourists are attracted to Morocco each year. They also come to explore the culture. The technological revolution has been in communication. More companies are being introduced in communication which creates a competition. The most notable change in communication is internet services. They have introduced many new internet technologies for better and faster communication. I remember that only a dial-up connection was available when I was younger. This change in technology helped businesses communicate. There is also a lot of investment in Morocco. There are many people that invest in land and properties. These people consist of foreigners and Moroccans. There has not been a significant industrial revolution, though. The most common industry is in the phosphate mining, but that has been around for a long time.

Socratic Seminar

The Socratic Seminar today in class was a creative and enjoyable way to expand our knowledge. Some people came up with different answers to the questions that I wouldn't have thought of. One of these ideas that really stood out to me was how economic opportunity will help prevent bad parts of society such as drug dealing. People only do those things when they have no money nor job. Chadine particularly helped the dialogue forward by adding to other people's ideas or introducing new ideas that helped other people think deeper and find new things. There were several times when it lapsed into a debate when some people disagreed about and idea, but they would come to an agreement when they explained why they chose that answer. I think an important part (and the best part) of the seminar is how you can add to other people's ideas. You can come up with knew ideas throughout the seminar from interesting points that are introduced. Students often built on other ideas which I think was more important to our learning. You can even change your answer or opinion to a question when you agree with another person's point of view and get different perspectives. Overall, I benefited a lot from the Socratic Seminar.

Crystal Cave in Mexico

In the year 2000, miners miners working in the Naica silver mine broke through the wall of the cavern to find the biggest crystals on earth. Entering the caves is very dangerous because inside, it is 50 degrees Celsius and 100 % humidity. When you breathe in these circumstances, fluid in your lungs start to condense and can kill after about 10 minutes. Professor Iain Stewart got to visit this cave containing gypsum crystal that were longer than 10 meters. In order to enter the cave, the professor had to wear a cooling suit and needed to have a doctor with him waiting outside of the cave. Only a handful of geologists were able to study this cave. "Despite all the dangers, my overwhelming memory is the sheer beauty of the place." wrote the professor. For the people who run the Naica mine, though, the cave is not so important so sooner or later they will take out the pumps and the cave will flood. He suggests that many other crystal caves might be waiting to be discovered.

Successes and Failures of Reconstruction

Successes
-They were able to have a welfare system to help the people who needed to start their lives who were mostly Freedmen (The Freedmen’s Bureau).
-They were also able to bring some Northerners to the South to try to ease up some of the tension.
-It got the United States somewhat back on it’s tracks.

Failures
-The distribution of wealth and power was not even.
-Freedmen were not completely free, even after the Amendments. They were still mistreated and weren’t given their full rights.
-The economy was not fully restored.
-Giving back the states control of Americans’ basic civil rights was like starting all over. In the South, the freedmen wouldn’t have their rights because of racist Southern leaders. It defeats the whole purpose of going through reconstruction.
