Successes and Failures of Reconstruction

Successes
-They were able to have a welfare system to help the people who needed to start their lives who were mostly Freedmen (The Freedmen’s Bureau).
-They were also able to bring some Northerners to the South to try to ease up some of the tension.
-It got the United States somewhat back on it’s tracks.

Failures
-The distribution of wealth and power was not even.
-Freedmen were not completely free, even after the Amendments. They were still mistreated and weren’t given their full rights.
-The economy was not fully restored.
-Giving back the states control of Americans’ basic civil rights was like starting all over. In the South, the freedmen wouldn’t have their rights because of racist Southern leaders. It defeats the whole purpose of going through reconstruction.
